Denville Dawgs Update
Thanks to a generous $3000 contribution from the Denville PAL, the Dawgs were able to grow their program again. This year they attracted over 120 children from Denville and the surrounding area.
Neil Hogan has stepped up to lead the owls, replacing long time manager Donna Walicky, who still helps Neil out coaching. Neil is also a member of the Denville recreation committee and is on track to take over the management of the Dawgs youth program in the next couple of years.
Horatio Pellegrino took over the lead role for the falcon division this year, assisted by Robert Gibbs, Chris Shanahan, and Jake Scoville. These men helped lead the falcons to another successful year. Boonton Townships David Alexander took over the lead in the hawk division from Lill Rimac, who was still available to help coach. Also coaching the huge hawk division were Jim Lloyd, Jim Chicarella, Glen Hopler, Rick Vollmar, and Chuck Titone. Tom Feury lead the charge in the Eagle division assisted by Ralph Scoville, Joe Delosa, Eric Welisky, Bryan Shanahan, Mike D’Achille, Greg Farbanish, Kevin Corley, and Kara McCloskey.
What is most impressive about the growth of the Denville Dawgs is the number of volunteers that have been pulled in from the parent and past player ranks, Many of the people mentioned above never played or coached rugby before. Several others were High School students who graduated from the youth program and wanted to “give back” by helping either coaching or refereeing. The coaching and referee clinics sponsored by Morris Rugby helped make this possible. Without the support of the Denville PAL, Morris Rugby, and these individual volunteers, a summer of healthy youth rugby would not have been possible in Denville.
